Who cut off Robert Jenkins' ear, precipitating the War of Jenkins' Ear?
Robert Jenkins, skipper of the British ship Rebecca, claimed that Spanish coast guards cut off his ear during a skirmish on this date in 1731. In a meeting before the House of Commons in 1738, Jenkins was said to have showed off his preserved severed ear, inciting growing hostility between Britain and Spain over Spain's brutal attempts to stop Britain from illicit trading in the Spanish Caribbean. Prime minister Robert Walpole reluctantly declared war on Spain. It was called the War of Jenkins' Ear.
